Charles enlisted on 26 May 1862 in the 10th Regiment RI Inf Co F&S as Hospital Steward and mustered out with the Regiment in Providence, Rhode Island on 01 Sept 1862, There is some data that shows Charles also served with the 5th Regiment RI Heavy Artillery from 06 Sept 1862 until 1 Apr 1865 as Surgeon, but we have not been able to confirm this report(1890 Veterans Schedules reported by his wife Francis) there is a Charles King reported in the 5th RI HA but as Private and no other data but enlistment date. We tend to believe that he did serve with the 5th RI HA.

After the war Charles and Francis lived at 43 Waterman Street in Providence, Rhode Island where he continued in his father's business as cotton merchant. Charles died on 27 Aug 1881 and is buried at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island.
