Winthrop enlisted in the 1st Regiment Rhode Island Infantry Company C on 14 Jun 1861 as a Private and mustered out in Providence,RI with the rest of the Regiment. He reenlisted as 2nd Lieutenant on 26 May 1862 with the 10th Regiment as Quartermaster and mustered out on 01 Sept 1862.
 
He was born in 1830 in Providence, Rhode Island
 
Father John James DeWolf ( Physician)
born-1807 died-25 Jul 1894 at the age of 86 yrs.
 
Mother Annette Halsey
born-1814 died-24 Apr 1884 at the age of 70 yrs.
They had three children,

Elizabeth
born-1833  died-25 Feb 1915 at the age of 81 yrs.
 
John Halsey
born-1836  died-05 Jun 1915 at the age of 78 yrs.
 
Winthrop married Engenia Tams
born-1832  died-26 Mar 1903 at the age of 70 yrs.
and had three children,

Agnes
born-13 Dec 1867  died-03 Jan 1946
 
Halsey
born-31 Dec 1870
 
Winthrop died on 12 Dec 1882 at the age of 52 yrs. He is buried with his parents, brother, sister, wife, and Agnes at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence,RI
